US 23 Lee Road Livingston County MI (~8,000 VPH)
Mr. Johnson was the roundabout design engineer responsible for the capacity analysis and horizontal design of what is the most complex system of roundabouts in the US at this time. These roundabouts opened in 2006.
Signalization alternatives were shown to not provide adequate capacity.
The roundabout alternative saved the cost of an expensive bridge while also providing significant capacity improvements (an excellent example of placing capacity where it is needed while maintaining narrow roads).
The US-23/Lee Road roundabout project is the winner of the 2008 Eminent Conceptor Award for engineering excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Michigan. This successful public/private partnership is the highest category award of the Michigan competition and evaluates projects on "complexity, innovation, client satisfaction, future value to the profession, and considerations for social, economic and sustainable design." This project is now eligible for the ACEC national competition. BRAVO! to all who contributed to this great success!
